I got to thinking this morning about life. In general how people treat each other. Right now in my life I'm having issues with my little brother. We have never gotten along and have never seen eye to eye, but there is nothing that I wouldn't do for him. I had to sit back and ask myself why he is acting the way he is acting and I realized that for a long time now I haven't thought of him as an adult but just my kid brother. Then this morning after I thought about it I went to my "bible". The book is called Native American Wisdom. Its is a small book and thanks to a botched camping trip it is rain worn, but it made it thru and it just gives it more personality. I love this book. Anyone who knows me knows that I have a great respect for Native Americans. I, myself am 1/8th Abenaki. I know its not much, but it is there and I'm so proud to have it. In many instances in my life I have looked to this book for guidance. I don't have to many elders in my life anymore so I go to those in books. This is one passage that has hit home for me today and I wanted to share it with all of you. I think we just need to be reminded every once in a while to be kind to each other. This passage is from a man I wish I could have met in my lifetime. He is the very beloved and respected Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe. His quote comes from the chapter intitled The Ways Of Living. I hope you enjoy and don't be afraid to comment on anything that I write. I would love to hear what your thoughts are. If I have touched you or if you think I'm full of bull. That is how you meet people and get to know more about yourself. Well here is the passage. Enjoy!
"Our fathers gave us many laws, which they had learned from their fathers. These laws were good. They told us to treat all people as they treated us; that we should never be the first to break a bargian; that it was a disgrace to tell a lie; that we should speak only the truth' that it was a shame for one man to take from another his wife or his property without paying for it. We were taught to believe that the Great Spirit sees and hears everything, and that he never forgets, that hereafter he will give every man a spirit-home according to his deserts: If he has been a good man, he will have a good home; if he has been a bad man, he will have a bad home. This I believe, and all my people believe the same." Chief Joseph Nez Perce I completely agree with this passage and I plan on trying to remember it. It just won't help me with my situation with my brother, but also to learn to forgive those in my life that have wronged me. I just hope that I have the strength to do so. |
